John chapter 3 is the core chapter of the gospel that reveals how a person enters the kingdom of God and obtains eternal life. Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews, and he even acknowledged the signs of Jesus, but he did not know the truth of being born again. Therefore, a person is not saved by religious position, knowledge of the Scriptures, or the efforts of the flesh, but must be born anew. Jesus said, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5).
