In John chapter 4, the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ and the work of salvation He accomplishes are shown in various aspects. First, Jesus showed the aspect of a true man. The text records, “Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well.” He grew tired as He walked along the way and was thirsty, so He asked the Samaritan woman for water. But He who asked for water was, on the contrary, the One who gives the living water with which one never thirsts again. That is, though He put on flesh and came close to man, He was the Lord of life who gives life to man’s soul.
