Christmas is not far off. In John chapter 3, which we read today, a man named Nicodemus appears. This man was a ruler of the Jews and a religious leader who was called a teacher in the nation of Israel. This man came to Jesus and had a conversation, and when we see him giving answers beside the point to the words of Jesus, it is truly frustrating. Yet Nicodemus was fundamentally not a man who opposed Jesus, but a man who respected, loved, and tried to follow Jesus. So it is all the more frustrating. He came to Jesus and praised Him, saying that no one could do these signs that He did unless God was with him. Because he had heard many rumors about Jesus, it was a remark he made thinking, in his own way, that he was exalting Jesus. But Jesus said to him, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Then he asked in return. How can a person be born again when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and come out?
