What is it to worship in spirit and truth? I want to tell you its meaning first and then go into the whole passage. It was said that we “must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24), and “spirit and truth” means to worship before God with a true heart together with the Holy Spirit. Worship in spirit and truth begins from receiving the remission of sin by believing that the Lord took charge of all the sins we human beings commit with the flesh by being baptized by John at the Jordan River, and by believing that He was nailed to the Cross and received all the judgment for us. In return, we receive the Holy Spirit as a gift, and the worship offered in the state of having true faith and the Holy Spirit in the heart is precisely worship in spirit and truth. The word “spirit” means the Holy Spirit, and the word “truth” refers to the true faith that believes, “Jesus is my Savior; Jesus has perfectly removed all the sins I commit.” The worship offered with that faith is worship in spirit and truth.
